EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall

Immerse yourself in an extraordinary evening of diverse repertory as Ohio Contemporary Ballet returns to EJ Thomas Hall with a program that bridges generations, featuring masterpieces by iconic pioneers Paul Taylor and Heinz Poll with 21st-century visionary choreographers. Critics have described the company’s performances as “spellbinding”.

Heinz Poll’s Adagio for Two never loses its luster in its portrayal of sculptural poses and meticulous partnering, which give the dancers a deity-like quality. The company is honored to present Paul Taylor’s Airs (1978), celebrated for its “astounding lyricism and breathtaking beauty” and performed to the timeless music of G.F. Handel, showcasing the dancers’ exceptional technique and seamless movement. Nycole Ray’s Opaque exudes a mysterious and majestic aura, delving into hidden depths with dramatic choreography and the striking visual of flowing black skirts. Her emotionally intense work has been featured at the prestigious International Black Dance Festival in Vienna and captures the trials of contemporary life. The company will present the world premiere of choreographer, Avree Walker’s dynamic fusion of contemporary techniques and captivating lyricism, showcasing his unparalleled ability to craft compelling, narrative-driven movement with smooth fluidity.

This captivating program celebrates the evolution of choreography, blending bold voices, tradition, and beauty into an unforgettable evening of deep artistry.

Explore the relationship between music and dance as BlueWater collaborates with Ohio Contemporary Ballet in a program featuring dance favorites including— Sehnsucht, choreographed by Nicholas Rose to the music of Elgar’s Serenade for Strings and Heinz Poll’s Adagio for Two, set to Albinoni’s Adagio in G minor. The orchestra will solo in Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major by Franz Schubert.

The highly acclaimed BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, featuring world-class professional musicians from the region, and Ohio Contemporary Ballet is excited to unite once again for a synergistic creative endeavor. Building on successful past projects, including a virtual performance during the pandemic in 2020 and another joint effort in 2022, this continued alliance demonstrates a shared commitment to enriching the community through innovative and inspiring cultural experiences. Maestro Daniel Meyer and Dr. Margaret Carlson will share glimpses behind the scenes into the discussions and choices that help guide the program selection prior to the show.

BlueWater Chamber Orchestra is committed to expanding the boundaries of what a chamber orchestra can be. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Daniel Meyer we’re creating an era of lively creative performance and educational experiences. Reaching out to listeners via neighborhood-based programs that bring classical music directly to their doors, we perform at various venues across the region including Church of the Covenant in University Circle, Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights and The Breen Center for the Performing Arts at Saint Ignatius High School in Ohio City. Special educational and outreach concerts have taken the orchestra to Cleveland Metropolitan School District facilities, Rocky River, and Mansfield. BlueWater musicians also perform in various smaller ensembles throughout the region. Committed to welcoming new audiences while serving established chamber music aficionados, BlueWater celebrates the luminous world of inspiring chamber orchestra music.

Sehnsucht

Ohio Contemporary Ballet proudly commissioned Sehnsucht, a stunning work choreographed by the renowned Nicholas Rose. Nicholas began his dance journey right here with Ohio Contemporary Ballet before gracing the stages of Dance Theatre of Harlem and The National Ballet of Canada. Now based in Europe, he has cultivated an inspiring career as a performer, educator, and choreographer, leaving an indelible mark on the world of dance.
