Verb Ballets performs with the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra with guest conductor John Gordon Ross at Lakeside Chautauqua in Hoover Auditorium on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 8:15 PM. The Verb Ballets dancers will dazzle in Ohio Ballet founder Poll’s Andante Sostenuto noted for its true expression of beauty and gorgeous pointe work. In the Grand Pas de Deux from Don Quixote by the great 19th century Russian choreographer Marius Petipa, the dancers will showcase their dazzling technique. Other selections of repertory to be performed with the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra are Tarentella, Broken Bridges and Aposiopesis. The performance is free with day passes to the Lakeside Chautauqua which are available for $23.50 for Adults and as always, kids age 12 & under and guests over age 90 are always free.

Verb Ballets returns to The Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival at Akron’s Firestone Park on July 27 & 28, 2018 at 8:45pm. These free community performances will showcase Verb Ballets classical selections and bold modern works. The program will feature K281 by internationally acclaimed choreographer Adam Hougland. The ballet epitomizes the musicality of Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 3 in B-flat major, K. 281. The epic music of Ravel’s Bolero comes to life in this visual masterpiece by Heinz Poll with a drive, propulsion and intensity that build with the famous crescendo. Verb Ballets remounts the striking contemporary ballet Aposiopesis by choreographer Charles Anderson. This full ensemble ballet was originally created for Company C and these performances will be dedicated to Kate Lieberth Lytton, who was both a dancer in that company and who danced the principal role in Aposiopesis. Don’t miss the company’s summer appearance in Akron to celebrate the arts in our community.

Verb Ballets returns to Cain Park Evans Amphitheater on Friday, June 29, 2018 for a FREE performance as a gift to the community! Entitled Director’s Choice, Verb’s Directors Dr. Margaret Carlson and Richard Dickinson, MFA have chosen their favorite works from the 17-18 as the final performance celebrating Verb’s 30th anniversary.

Classical music enthusiasts will enjoy the choreographic inventiveness in Heinz Poll’s, Schubert Waltzes noted as, “catapults ordinary waltz steps into a delightful combination of classicism and wit”. Verb Ballets’ dancers will dazzle in a display of classical technique full of speed and high spirits in Tarantella, staged by former Cleveland Ballet dancer, Pamela Pribisco. Also featured is Dark Matter, an intense physical contemporary work by award winning Philadelphia choreographer Tommie-Waheed Evans, described by critics as, “sleek encounters that brim with contrasting patterns and connections”. Verb Ballets’ dancer and choreographer, Michael Escovedo, remounts Broken Bridges to tell a family story of struggle with mental illness set to the haunting music of Shostakovich. Jill Marlow Krutzkamp is a Pilates and wellness director, and professional dancer who has been dedicated to dance and the performing arts for more than 27 years. She began her dance career with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre then spent nine years with the Cincinnati Ballet and recently retired from the Kansas City Ballet to pursue her passion of helping others with the development of their dancing careers. Jill Marlow Krutzkamp is coming to Verb Ballets April 9-13, 2018 to set Adam Houghland’s K281. Jill Marlow Krutzkamp was one of the original cast members in the ballet commissioned by Cincinnati Ballet in 2007. Verb Ballets is a contemporary ballet company that presents dynamic programming through bold artistry, unique styles and technical excellence that captivates a broad audience. For the past 30 years the company has fostered dance appreciation and nurtured wellness through movement in outreach and education programs. Verb Ballets has also been named one of Five Great Tiny Troupes in America by Dance Magazine and was one of the 25 dance companies in America to watch.

ProDanza

ProDanza Center in Havana, Cuba was founded by world renown dancer and teacher, Laura Alonso. The technique of the prestigious Cuban school of ballet is an offshoot of the specialized teaching department of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. The company founded in 1995, presented annually more than one hundred functions in three theaters. The company has traveled to Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Guadeloupe and Jamaica. The full repertoire of ballets the company includes: The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Don Quixote, The Corsair, The Swan Lake, La Bayadere, La Fille Mal Gardee, La Sylphide, The Three Musketeers, Dracula, Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges Yarini, as well as programs Pas de deux concerts with classical and original works by contemporary choreographers.

Presented as The Cleveland Havana Ballet, the Verb Ballets and ProDanza will perform the full length classical ballet, Yarini running March 8-11, 2018 in Alicia Alonso Grand Theater in Havana. The ballet is by international dancer and choreographer, Iván Alonso, the son of Laura Alonso. Yarini is based on a historical hero who reached mythical proportions within popular Cuban culture and imagination. The ballet centers around Alberto Yarini, known as the Prince of Old Havana, Louis Lotot, Yarini’s notorious rival, and the women they loved. The ballet is set in Havana during the Cuban War of Independence against Spain; during Yarini’s rise to power that led to his inevitable tragic death in 1910. The battle highlights passion, power and struggles for freedoms that are the essence of the Cuban spirit.

PROGRAM

I ACT (1st scene) The Lady of the Veil, in search of Yarini, arrives at San Isidro, a zone of tolerance of the time, where prostitution was practiced. House # 60 was administered by Yarini, where the Lady of the Veil decides to wait for it. La Petite Berthe, the French prostitute with the greatest clientele, was envied by the others and Letot’s favorite, head of the French Cholos (Apaches), adversaries of the Cuban Chulos (Guayabitos). As every year Letot goes to Paris to renew his merchandise, while the Lady of the Veil causes the union of Yarini and Berthe increasing more the hatred between Guayabitos and Apaches.

I ACT (2nd scene) In the Cosmopolitan restaurant, where high society used to be, Yarini’s antiracial character manifests itself by beating the American business representative who mocked a hero of our independence struggles.

II ACT (1st scene) In the square, near the port of Havana, Yarini waits for Letot to tell him that Berthe has a new owner, Letot faithful to his saying – live for women and not die for them – shows him his new acquisition, Yarini in a show of machismo unleashes the wrath of the Apaches who pressure Letot to plan his death.

II ACT (2nd scene) Night falls and the hard day begins for women who exchange pleasure for money, but the Petite Berthe does not feel well and when she says goodbye to Yarini, she has the impression that something bad is going to happen. The Apaches arrived to make their plan, everything seemed perfect but Letot could never imagine that killing the man, created a Myth.

Choreographer

Iván Alonso

He began his studies in Classical Dance in 1967 at the National School of Art (ENA), where he graduated in 1975 as a teacher dancer. From there he joined the National Ballet of Cuba reaching the soloist level. He was part of the Young Guard of which he is founder. In 1998 he was awarded the main teaching category of Adjunct Assistant of the Higher Institute of Art. He was appointed choreographer by the Evaluation Committee whose president is Alicia Alonso. He currently serves as Ballet Master and Choreographer of ProDanza the Center for the Promotion of Dance.

Travel and trade embargo from Cuba that halted the art exchanges

Until 2014 there was a travel and trade embargo from Cuba that halted the art exchanges for decades. Cuban ballet has been at the pinnacle of international dance for years and Cuba continues to produce some of the ballet world’s best dancers. The daughter of legendary ballet royalty Alicia Alonso, Laura Alonso is herself an award-winning ballet teacher with a 25-year career performing with Ballet Nacional de Cuba. This is the second year of the cultural exchange with Alonso through the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion: Cuba Edition. She came to Cleveland, Ohio for two months this past spring to train Verb Ballets dancers in the Cuban method likely the first-of-its-kind exchange connecting cultural institutions of a major Midwestern city with a selection of celebrated Cuban artists for an extended project-based residency.

Verb Ballets’ international tour will commence with a shared repertory program with ProDanza running March 16-18, 2018 highlighting the unique styles of American and Cuban ballet at The National Theatre in Havana, Cuba.
